MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Senior Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) carded a 75 to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth golf team to a ninth place finish on Day 1 of the 31st Annual Duke Nelson Tournament hosted by Middlebury College.
The host Panthers pace the 25-team field with a combined score of 305, 21 strokes above pair. RPI is ranked second (309), followed by Rochester (313), Johnson & Wales (315) and Salem State (315). The Corsairs completed the first day of competition at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course with a combined score of 318.
Danko entered the clubhouse with the fourth lowest score on the pair 71-course. Sophomore Michael Byron (Milford, Mass.) and freshman Tyler Hemingway (Fairhaven, Mass.), who was making his collegiate debut, each turned in a round of 79. Sophomore Ryan Boldy (Milford, Mass.) was the fourth UMass Dartmouth student-athlete in the clubhouse with an 85, while junior Sean Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) rounded out the Corsair contingent with a round of 87.
Williams Grant Raffel is the individual leader with a score of 73.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 9 a.m. when the Corsairs begin the second and final day of competition.
