WARWICK, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sophomore Michael Byron (Bourne, Mass.) carded a two-day total of 153 (+9) to place third overall at the Rhode Island College Invitational this past weekend at the Valley Country Club.
Williams College registered the lowest round on each day to capture the team title with a combined score of 614, 17 strokes ahead of the host Anchormen. Manhattanville College (637) and Endicott College (644) rounded out the top-four, while the Corsairs finished tied for eighth with Johnson & Wales (651).
Bryon entered the clubhouse with the second lowest score on Day 1, producing a one-under 71. The Bourne, Mass. product was just one of two golfers to complete the opening round under par thanks to five birdies, including a 30-foot putt from right to left on the sixth hole. The following day, Bryon battled strong wind gusts to complete the final round with an 82 to finish one stroke ahead of Manhattanville's Eric Michalak.
Freshman Tyler Hemingway (Fairhaven, Mass.) knocked two strokes off his opening round 83 to placed 31st overall with a combined score of 164. Classmate Jared Fadding turned in an impressive collegiate debut, breaking 80 with a 79 on Day 1. He was the No. 3 Corsair and 41st overall by completing the 36-hole course with a combined score of 166.
Senior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) and junior Sean Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) rounded out the UMass Dartmouth contingent.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Wednesday, April 8, when the Corsairs travel to Newport National Golf Club for the Bentley Newport Classic. UMass Dartmouth will host the annual Hampton Inn Invitational at Allendale Country Club on Friday, April 10.
