WARWICK, R.I. – The UMass Dartmouth men's golf squad turned in a third-place team finish on Friday at the RIC Invitational to kick off the 2016 spring season. Due to weather, the event was called after the first day of competition, rendering the Friday results as the final scores.
The Corsairs posted a score of 318, just three behind winner Rhode Island College and one behind second-place Worcester State in the field of 15 teams. Led by junior Michael Byron (Bourne, Mass.), UMass Dartmouth's top three golfers all shot within the top 25 individually with scores of 80 or lower.
Byron finished tied for ninth, posting a 78 to go six strokes over the par-72 course. He collected a 38 on the front nine and finished the day with a 40 for the back nine. He was followed by sophomore Jared Fadding (Lenox, Mass.), who turned in a score of 79 to finish tied for 17th on the day.
Rounding out the UMass Dartmouth top-25 finished was senior George Bent (Barnstable, Mass.), who shot an 80 on the day including a 38 on the back nine to finish to place tied for 22nd. Finishing close behind Bent was sophomore Bryce Mitchell (Beverly, Mass.), tying for 29th place with a score of 81, while freshman Jackson Mitchell (Marion, Mass.) shot an 84 to round out the Corsair performances.
Worcester State's Mike Jezierski took the individual title on the event, shooting a 75 with sub-40 performances on each of the nines.
UMass Dartmouth is back on the course next weekend, hosting the 2016 Westport Hampton Inn Invitational next Friday and Saturday at Allendale Country Club in North Dartmouth.
