Byron Posts Third Top-Three Finish of the Spring at the JWU Wildcat Invitational

CRANSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth senior Michael Byron (Bourne, Mass.) collected his third top-three finish of the spring to lead the Corsairs at the Johnson & Wales Wildcat Spring Invitational, held at Cranston Country Club over the weekend.

The Basics
Score: 9th (644) of 17 teams 

How it Happened
Byron was the only Corsair to shoot sub-80 rounds on both Saturday and Sunday. Following Saturday's first round, the senior sat tied atop the field of 84 golfers with his score of 75 (+4). He carried his consistency into round two on Sunday, shooting six strokes over (77) to wrap up a tournament total of 152, tying for third overall. 

Sophomore Jackson Mitchell (Marion, Mass.) shaved five strokes from his score from the first round to the second to total 163 (T-38th) for the tournament. After registering a round of 84 (+13) on Saturday, Mitchell rebounded to notch the Corsairs' second-lowest score on Sunday at 79 (+8). 

Junior Bryce Mitchell (Beverly, Mass.) posted a consistent two-day total of 164, posting a round of 81 (+10) for the first day and 83 (+12) for the second, tying for 44th in the individual scoring. On Sunday, junior Jared Fadding (Lenox, Mass.) took six strokes off his Saturday score of 86 (+15) to enter the clubhouse at 80 (+9) on Sunday, finishing at 166 at tied for 49th.

Freshman Nick Avilla (Westport, Mass.) rounded out the Corsair five with his overall score of 168, consisting of a round of 85 (+14) on Saturday and an 84 (+13) on Sunday. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Since resuming the spring season on April 7, Byron has registered sub-80 scores in five of his six rounds. He's placed in the top three in three of UMass Dartmouth's five competitions.
  • Tufts' Owen Elliot was the individual champion for the weekend, one of just two golfers to score below Byron. He turned in a two day total of 150 and rounds of 76 and 74, respectively.
  • Western New England claimed the team title for the event at 612 strokes, while Babson won the Spring Series, consisting of UMass Dartmouth's Westport Hampton Inn Invitational, RIC's Anchorman Invitational and JWU's Wildcat Invitational.
