UMass Dartmouth freshman Curtis Merritt was named as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Rookie of the Week for the second straight week on Tuesday afternoon for his efforts at the Southern Maine Fall Classic over Columbus Day weekend.
A native of Wareham, Mass. and a graduate of Sturgis West High School, Merritt finished tied for fifth in a field of 40 competitors for the Corsairs on the par 71 layout at the Gorham Country Club, as he fired back-to-back rounds of 75 to lead UMass Dartmouth to a runner-up performance in the eight-team field behind only the host Huskies. Curtis shared this week’s conference honor with Southern Maine senior Parker Sanderson, who also carded a two-day total of 150 in the competition.
Head Coach Joel Baptista’s Corsairs return to action this weekend when UMass Dartmouth travels to Sutton, Mass. to compete for the program’s second Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship at Blackstone National Golf Club.
