BREWSTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team is in tenth place among a 23-team Division III field after the first day of action at the two-day New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships on the Port Course at The Captain's Golf Course on Monday.
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships have 44 total teams participating, including teams from NCAA Divisions I and II. UMass Dartmouth ended the day 29th in the total field.
The Corsairs shot a team score of 344. Sacred Heart is first at 302. The Corsairs lead Castleton State by one shot, trail Providence College by one shots, and trail Brandeis by three.
Freshman Joe Connor (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet HS) led the Corsairs with a score of 83. Freshman Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) shot an 85, sophomore Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) came in at 86, junior Rob Leaver (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet HS) had a 90, and junior John Ripp (Bolton, CT/East Catholic HS) shot a 94.
"It was a great effort by the team out there today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "They had to work against a spectacular wind. It was blowing 20-30 miles per hour...I think that the effort out there in today's conditions gives the team a good chance at a top 10 finish tomorrow."
The tournament will conclude Tuesday.
