PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's golf team is tied for second in a six-team field after the first round of their spring 2010 opener at the Rhode Island College Invitational at the Triggs Memorial Golf Course Friday.
The Corsairs shot a team score of 325, tying them with Providence, placing them behind Babson, which led the first day of action at 316. Wentworth was next at 331, Rhode Island College came in at 335, and Suffolk shot 371.
Junior Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) led the Corsairs with a score of 80 on the par 72 course. Freshman Conor O'Malley (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) was next with a score of 81, senior Rob Leaver (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet Regional HS) and sophomore Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) both came in at 82, and junior Matt Brown (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) shot 91.
"I thought it was a good performance for our first time out," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "Conor had a good round, he was five over after three holes and he held it together. We only had four rounds of practice prior to the tournament because of the weather, and we didn't have the touch that you need in the short game. It was a picture perfect day today, and tomorrow looks like it will be nice as well. Hopefully, we can make up a few shots and play well tomorrow."
The tournament will conclude Saturday.
