CRANSTON, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's golf team is in third place in a 13-team field after the first day of the two-day Johnson & Wales Spring Invitational at the Cranston Country Club Saturday.
The Corsairs shot a team score of 323, placing them 14 strokes behind first-place NYU and nine shots in back of Babson.
Individually, senior Rob Leaver (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet HS) shot a 79, freshman Joe Connor (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet HS) shot an 80, freshman Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) and junior Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) each shot 82, and freshman Terrel Parent (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) shot an 86.
"It was a good team effort," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "The eighth hole is an island green, and we went in the water a few times, and that cost us some shots, Nick Jagoe and Scott Woodacre each had a bad hole that cost them good scores. Now that we're in the hunt, it should be interesting to see how we play tomorrow."
The tournament will conclude Sunday.
