GREENSBORO, NC-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's golf team shot a team score of 327 and ranks 38th out of 40 teams after the first day of play at the NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Guilford at the Grandover Resort.
The Corsairs trail Carroll (WI) by one stroke. Oglethorpe and St. John's (MN) are tied for first at 286, while Gustavus Adolphus, Methodist and Wisconsin-Eau Claire are tied for 13th at 299. The field will be cut to the lowest 15 scores and ties after Wednesday's second round.
Sophomore Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) and junior George Gillmore (Cotuit, MA/Barnstable HS/Fairfield) led the way for UMD, shooting scores of 81 that left them tied for 156th. Junior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) shot an 82 and is tied for 171st, sophomore Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS/Allegheny College/BCC) shot and 83 and is tied for 179th, and senior Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) shot an 86 and is tied for 196th.
"I think reality set in for us today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "It's a whole new ballgame when the tournament starts, and it took a while for us to shake our nerve. We were like a deer in headlights. In golf, you have to establish a rhythm, and we would have a good hole, and then a bad hole."
The Corsairs hope for better results tomorrow. "George (Gillmore) had a nice day," said Baptista. "Brandon struggled early, but he finished with two birdies in the final five holes. Hopefully, we've got the nerves out of our system, and we hope to play better tomorrow and come up with a respectable finish."
The second round will be played Wednesday.
