MIDDLEBURY, VT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team shot a team score of 321 for a two-day total of 629 and a 10th place finish in their first golf tournament of the fall 2010 season, the 25-team Duke Nelson Invitational, hosted by Middlebury at the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Rensselaer, the first day leader, shot 300 Sunday to place first with a 36-hole score of 606. The Corsairs finished two strokes behind Babson.
Sophomore Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, MA/ORR/Allegheny College/Bristol CC) shot a 78 for a two-day total of 154 to tie for 24th and lead the Corsairs. Senior Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) shot 80 for 156 and tied for 35th, sophomore Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) shot 83 for 158 and tied for 45th, junior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) shot 80 for 161 and tied for 64th, and freshman Billy Guilford (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake Regional HS) shot 83 for 164 and tied for 87th.
"You hate to go backwards on day two, but we started off a little tight and there was a little bit of pressure on us, just being a couple of shots behind after the first day," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "We have a young team, and this is a good experience, and it will help us for next time. Brandon Oldham had a nice tournament for his first collegiate start, and, overall, we did well and it shows what we're capable of. A top 10 finish in a strong field is a good showing for the first time out."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Johnson & Wales Match Play Invitational October 3rd and 4th..
