Oct. 4, 2010

CRANSTON, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's golf team split their matches on the final day of action, but finished first at the Johnson & Wales Match Play Invitational, which concluded Monday at the par-71 Cranston Country Club.

The Corsairs, who entered Monday's play in first place with four points, finished with nine points. Host Johnson & Wales was second with eight points, Rhode Island College was third with three points and Providence College's club team was fourth with six points. UMass Dartmouth, which defeated PC, 4-1, in Sunday's first round, defeated RIC, 3-2, and lost to Johnson & Wales, 3-2.

Individually, junior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) and junior George Gillmore (Cotuit, MA/ Barnstable HS/Fairfield) each won twice, and each finished the tournament undefeated. Jagoe defeated Bryan Picinisco of RIC, 3 and 2, and then defeated Steve LeDonne of JWU, one up, in the match that ultimately decided the tournament championship. Gillmore defeated Joe Fioramanti of RIC, 6 and 5, and then downed Mike Bubolo of JWU, 4 and 2.

"It was a dogfight, we had some great matches against two good teams in our conference," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "It went right down to the end, and the match between Nick and Steve was one for the ages. The matches could have gone either way, we were up, but Johnson & Wales battled back and made things interesting. Nick Jagoe showed why he's our captain, he won all three of his matches, and George won all three of his matches in his first collegiate tournament. It was good to win, and hopefully, it will give us momentum."

UMass Dartmouth will return to action Friday at the RIC Fall Invitational.
