BREWSTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's golf team shot a team score of 322 and is 18th in a 37-team field after the first day of play at the two-day, New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Fall Championships at the par-72 Captains Golf Course.
The tournament includes teams from all three NCAA divisions. Rhode Island led the way with a score of 297, while Husson led the field in Division III at 308. The Corsairs ranked eighth of the 21 Division III teams in the field.
Individually, sophomore Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) shot a 78 and is tied for 39th, freshman Billy Guilford (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake Regional HS) shot an 80 and is tied for 65th, and sophomore Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, MA/ORR HS/Allegheny/BCC), junior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) and senior Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) each shot 82 and are tied for 89th.
"We're right in the thick of things, for the most part, we hit the ball well today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "Our short game killed us. We had too many three-putts, and we gave a lot of strokes back. Matt and Billy played very well today, considering it's the first time they've seen the course. They held it together, and gave us a chance to move up tomorrow."
The tournament will conclude Tuesday.
