Golf Team Arrives in Greensboro for NCAA Championships
May 8, 2011
The team was told it was a business trip as we prepared for the NCAAs and they showed up this morning at 7:30am in style, wearing navy blazers, dress pants and white collared shirts. The team seemed loose as we headed to the TF Green Airport with usual banter being tossed about. The flight to Newark was quick and marked the first time Nick Jagoe had been on a plane. In typical Jagoe style, he was pretty unfazed. After finding out we were assigned the wrong connecting gate, we bolted to a shuttle to get to the correct one in plenty of time. The flight to Greensboro was a tad longer and most of the guys took the opportunity to get some rest. We arrived in Carolina to sunny skies and 74 degrees. Checked in at the host hotel The Sheraton Greensboro at Four Seasons. Great accommodations! After settling in, we grabbed a bite at a nearby Ruby Tuesday and came back to our rooms to unwind. The team headed over to the Downtown Greensboro to take in a minor league baseball game.
The Greensboro Grasshoppers are the Single A affiliate of the Florida Marlins and were playing the Hickory Crawdads. Sporting our new "Corsair Nation" t-shirts, we were immediately greeted by locals who originated from Worcester, Southboro and Dennisport. Nick caught a foul ball in the first inning and graciously gave it to me for my son Craig. The other highlight was Matt Connolly leading the charge to "YMCA" with the Grasshopper's mascot Guilford. We decided to leave after seven innings with Greensboro leading 5-3 to catch the second half of the Celtics game. Tomorrow the team has a 9am tee time for a practice round on the West Course at Grandover. It seems as their itching to play since as I type this I hear them chipping and putting out in the hotel hallway.
