Overtime Goal Sinks Hockey at Plymouth State
Junior forward Phil Bronner
PLYMOUTH, NH-Alex Cobble scored 1:17 into overtime to give host Plymouth State a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Hanaway Rink Thursday evening.
Cobble took a pass from Richie Zobek and scored on the only shot of the overtime period to end a game that saw the Corsairs rally from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Junior forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA/Lebanon Valley College) put the Corsairs on the board at 9:54 of the second period. Sophomore defenseman Nate Dupere (Fall River, MA/Hebron Academy) assisted on the play.
Dempsey's goal came just 17 seconds after Zobek had scored to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Junior forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons-EJHL) tied the game for UMass Dartmouth when he scored at 2;21 of the third period.
Travis Stevens had opened the scoring when his goal at 4:27 of the first period staked PSU to a 1-0 lead.
:"It was a tough way to lose after battling back and tying it up in the third period," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We played hard all night long, I thought (junior) Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) was outstanding in goal, and we probably deserved a better fate. Plymouth State is a very good team, and it was a tough loss."
The Panthers outshot the Corsairs, 40-20. Williams made 37 saves, while Jack Astedt stopped 18 shots for PSU. UMass Dartmouth had a pair of minor penalties for four minutes and PSU had one penalty for two minutes, and neither team scored on the power play.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 5-3-1 and 3-1-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while Plymouth State fell to 6-2-0 and 3-1-0 in the MASCAC with the defeat. UMD will return to action when they host Framingham State Saturday.
