BUZZARDS BAY, MA-Fourteen members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team have earned Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference honors.
Over half of the players on the Corsairs' roster were honored.
Five seniors-forwards Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) and Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Winchendon School/Boston Jr. Bulldogs-AJHL), and defensemen Mike Grzelcyk (Watertown, MA/Winchendon School), James Neal (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS), and Justin Pye (Medford, MA/Bridgton Academy) were named to the team. Junior forward William Colclough (Naples, FL/Frisco, TX HS/Peoria Mustangs-CSHL) and junior defenseman Matt Correia (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) were named. Sophomore goaltender Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB/Penticton HS/Golden Rockets-KJHL) was also honored, as were six freshmen-defensemen Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/St. John's HS/Northern Cyclones-AJHL) and Gabe Katsimpas (Winchester, MA/Adolfo Camarillo HS/River City Jaguars-NORPAC) and forwards Jason Effertz (Oceanside, CA/Rancho Buena Vista HS/Billings Bulls-NORPAC), Cody Gut (Chichester, NH/Pembroke Academy/Boston Jr. Bulldogs-AJHL), Steve Laliberte (East Falmouth, MA/Bridgton Academy), and Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI/Gabriel Richard HS/Rochester Ice Hawks-MNJHL).
"I'm extremely proud that 14 of the 25 players on our team earned either a 3.2 PA for the fall semester, or have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better in their academic careers," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "It's rewarding when All-Conference players like Mike Owens, Rob Dudley and Steve Ginand are also members of the MASCAC Academic All-Conference Team. I'm especially proud that six of our seven freshmen and four of our five seniors earned academic honors."
To qualify for MASCAC Academic All-Conference honors, student-athletes must earn a 3.2 grade point average, either in their previous semester or overall.
