Hockey Rallies With Shorthanded Goals to Tie Babson

BABSON PARK, MA –Sophomore forward Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI/Rochester Ice Hawks-MNJHL) scored a pair of shorthanded, unassisted goals as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team rallied to tie host Babson, 2-2, in their 2012-13 season opener at the Babson Skating Center Thursday evening.

Walters scored his first goal of the game at 15:37 of the second period, stealing the puck, going in alone and slipping the puck past Babson goaltender Jamie Murray to cut Babson's lead to 2-1. He scored his second goal in similar fashion at 8:58 of the third period to tie the game.

Troy Starrett scored both goals for the Beavers. He gave Babson a 1-0 lead at 1:51 of the first period, then scored at 5:57 of the second period to put Babson ahead, 2-0.

"It was a real good game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "It was a good opener, and I was very happy with the play and the pace of the game, especially considering that we had six rookies in the lineup. A year ago, we struggled in shorthanded situations. All in all, I felt it was a good opener against a very good Babson team."

The Beavers outshot the Corsairs, 37-32. Senior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 35 saves for the Corsairs, while Murray stopped 30 shots for Babson. Neither team scored a power play goal, with UMD blanked in two chances and the Beavers scoreless in four.

UMass Dartmouth is now 0-0-1, while Babson is now 0-1-2. The Corsairs will return to action Saturday at UMass Boston.
