SALEM, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team tied host Salem State College, 2-2 in overtime, in a MASCAC conference game on Saturday.

Corsairs senior defenseman Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPJHL) opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal at 51 seconds of the first period.  Salem State would tie the game at 15:26 of the first period on a Vikings goal by  Chad Goodwin from Stephen McManus and Dan Smolinksy.

The first period would end tied at 1-1 and both teams would play a scoreless second period as well.

The Corsairs would take the lead in the third period on a power play goal by senior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr Warriors-EJHL) assisted by sophomore forward Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI/Rochester Ice Hawks-MNJHL) and Hepler at 2:18.

That lead would stand all the way to 15:06 of the final frame would the Vikings would score on a power play goal of their own as Kristofer Faric found the net assisted by ANdrew Bettencourt and McManus.

Freshman John Sartell (Wakefield, MA/Bridgton Academy) would be called for board at 19:19 of the third and the Corsairs did a nice job killing off the final 41 seconds to send the game to overtime.

The Corsairs had a couple of good chance in overtime but Vikings goalie Ryan Sutliffe was up to the challenge turning away both opportunities en route to the tie.

"This was a well played game back and forth" said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We exchanged power play goals in the third and did a nice job killing a late penalty at the end of third and into overtime."

UMass Dartmouth moved to 1-1-2 with the tie, while Salem State went to 2-1-1.
