PLYMOUTH, NH –Kyle Greco's unassisted goal with 3:13 remaining in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and gave host Plymouth State a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Hanaway Rink Thursday evening.
Each team had scored in the second period after a scoreless first period.
Travis Stevens gave PSU a 1-0 lead when he flipped home a rebound 51 seconds into the second period with PSU on the power play. Greco and Richie Zobak assisted.
The Corsairs evened the score with a power play goal of their own at 15:33 of the second period. Sophomore forward Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI/Rochester Ice Hawks-MNJHL) batted home the rebound of a shot by senior defenseman Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPHL). Junior forward Greg Girtatos (Tyngsboro, MA/Bishop Guertin HS) also assisted.
"It was a good effort, but it was lacking in the final result that we wanted," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "I thought there were two turning points. Early in the third period, we had a glorious chance with their goalie out and the puck five feet from the net and we couldn't score. Late in the game, they got a bounce and the puck went in for the game-wining goal."
The Panthers outshot the Corsairs, 33-27. Senior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 31 saves for UMD, while Jack Astedt made 26 saves for PSU. The Corsairs converted one of two power play opportunities, while the Panthers were one for four.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 6-6-4 and 5-3-3 in the MASCAC with the defeat, while Plymouth State improved to 13-5-0 and 9-2-0 in the MASCAC with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Framingham State Saturday.
