WESTFIELD, MA –Senior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr.Warriors-EJHL) scored a power play goal with 4:30 remaining in the third period and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team played a 2-2 tie with host Westfield State, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Amelia Park Arena Tuesday evening.
McDonald re-directed a pass from senior forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons-EJHL) past WSU goaltender Ian Perrier to tie the game.
Dalton Jay had given the Owls a 2-1 lead when he picked up a loose puck in front of the net and beat UMD senior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Potters-OPJHL) midway through the second period.
Sophomore forward Dmitry Antipin (Novosibirsk, Russia/Cape Cod Cubs-EJHL) scored a power play goal for the Corsairs in the first period to tie the game at 1-1.
UMass Dartmouth outshot the Owls, 54-36. Williams made 34 saves for the Corsairs, while Perrier stopped 52 shots for Westfield State.
"We scored both of our goals on the power play, and we shut down one of the best power plays in the league, going three for three on the penalty kill," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We just couldn't get that extra goal. The silver lining is that we won the three-game series against Westfield with a win and two ties. However, we're going to need some help from someone else to have a chance at second place."
UMass Dartmouth is now 8-7-6 and 7-3-5 in the MASCAC, while Westfield State is now 13-6-3 and 9-4-3 in the MASCAC. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Fitchburg State Thursday evening. The Owls will visit Salem State Thursday.
