Three Unanswered Goals Lift Owls Over Corsairs

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Senior defender Josh McCully (North Bay, Ontario) scored with 25 seconds remaining in the game to lead Westfield State University to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's hockey team in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference  matchup on Saturday evening.

Two goals from UMass Dartmouth (2-4, 2-3 MASCAC) junior Shaun Walters gave the Corsairs an early advantage. The forward netted his fifth mark of the season with 12:49 left in the first period to put UMass Dartmouth up 1-0. Assists on the score went to freshman Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) and sophomore Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.). Walters scored the final goal for the Corsairs 8:29 into the second stanza off an assist from Restuccia.

Westfield State (3-4, 3-1 MASCA) was blanked by UMass Dartmouth goalie Ben Vandervies (Hannah, Alberta) through the first and halfway through second periods of play, until Owl forward Dalton Jay (Hamilton, Ontario) unleashed an offensive outburst.

The sophomore took advantage of a power play opportunity and put Westfield State on the scoreboard. Jay was setup by teammates P.J. McCadden (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and Vince Perreault (Braeside, Ontario) for his first score of the season, 16:47 into the second. Only 33 seconds later, Jay broke away from the Corsair defenders and tied the game at two goals apiece.

With overtime just seconds away, McCully put home a loose puck in front of the UMass Dartmouth net for the game-winner.

Owl goalie Eddie Davey (Orangeville, Ontario) recorded 26 saves in the win, while Vandervies stopped 43 shots for the Corsairs.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Babson College on Tuesday, November 26 at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
