WESTFIELD, Mass. – Eight different Corsairs found the back of the net as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team rolled past Westfield State, 9-2, in Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday evening at Amelia Park.
UMass Dartmouth, who defeated Westfield State by a score of 5-4 on Nov. 22, improved to 5-4-2 in the conference and 5-10-2 overall, while the Owls fell to 6-4 and 9-8. The win moves the Corsairs into a second place tie with Westfield State in the standings.
Freshman Kyle Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) beat the net-minder twice to lead the offensive charge. Sophomore Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) junior Evangelous Stefanou (Tabernacle, N.J.) and classmate John Sartell (Wakefield, Mass.) accumulated three points apiece in the win.
UMass Dartmouth built a 7-0 lead in the first 30 minutes and 18 seconds of the game. After a quite eight minutes to open the first period, the Corsairs struck for three scores in a three minute span. K. Zacharewicz kick started the surge when he lifted a rebound into to the upper left corner of the net at the eight minute, 53 second mark. Two minutes later, Stefanou tallied a score when he when he flipped a shot on goal through traffic from the right point. Only 39 seconds later, freshman Joe Echelmeier (Doylestown, Pa.) extended the Corsairs lead to three scores with nearly a carbon copy of Stephanou's goal. In the second stanza, Gilmore, Matt Baldino (Woburn, Mass.), K. Zacharewicz and Sartell added a score to cap the 7-0 rush.
Following a Westfield State goal to close out the second period, UMass Dartmouth poured on two more in the third to make the score 9-1. Senior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) completed a feed from sophomore Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) with six minutes and 38 seconds remaining in the regulation. Just over a minute later, T. Zacharewicz lit up the lamp on a power play chance to conclude the Corsair's scoring for the evening.
Westfield State received goals from Dalton Jay in the second period and Dave O'Connor, who converted a power play opportunity with three minutes and 14 seconds left before the final horn.
Sophomore goalie JJ Solloway (Derry, N.H.) stopped 39 shots en route to his fifth win of the season, while the Owls split time in net; Jonathan LoParco and Ian Perrier, with LoParco recording 21 saves and Perrier a dozen.
UMass Dartmouth returns to Hetland Arena at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Jan. 29, when the Corsairs host Stonehill in a non-conference contest.
