FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Framingham State University upended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team in Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Loring Arena on Saturday evening, 2-1.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 6-13-2 overall and 5-7-2 in the conference, while Framingham State improved to 5-13-2 and 4-9-1. On the year, the two teams went 1-1-1 in their head-to-head matchups.
The Rams cracked the scoring column first at the 15 minute, seven second mark of the opening period. Junior Melvin Nichols managed to secure a loose puck in front of the net and beat the net-minder for his third tally of the year.
Less than five minutes into the second, the Corsairs tied the game at one-all, when freshman Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) found the back of the net for his fifth score of the season. Sophomore Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.) and junior Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.) were awarded assists on the play.
Only two minutes and 27 seconds later, senior Ryan McDonald poked home a rebound off a shot attempt from classmate Brendan McCarron for the game-deciding strike.
In the third, the Corsairs managed to outshoot their opponent, 12-7, and had a trio of power-play opportunities, however were unable extend the contest into overtime with a game-tying score.
Sophomore JJ Solloway (Derry, N.H.) turned away 26 shots in the effort, while Alessio Muggli stopped 31 attempts en route to his fifth win of the season.
UMass Dartmouth returns to the ice at 6 pm on Thursday, Feb. 7, when the Corsairs travel to Plymouth St.
