WESTFIELD, Mass – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team could not complete the road comeback Saturday evening, falling to Westfield State 5-2 at Amelia Park Ice Arena in MASCAC action.
The defeat marked the Corsairs' third-straight loss, as they fall to 0-3-1 (0-2-1 MASCAC) on the season. Westfield State improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The Owls rattled off the first three scores of the contest, with one goal in each of the first two periods until both teams totaled five goals in the third.
At the 9:37 mark of the final stanza, senior John Sartell (Wakefield, Mass.) registered the Corsairs on the board, taking the pass from sophomore Brandon Berkley (Scottsdale, Ariz.) for an even-handed score.
Sophomore Jerry Laakso (Tampere, Finland) then put UMD within striking distance, cutting the Westfield State lead in half when he received the pass from both Sartell and Berkley four minutes and nine seconds later.
Owl senior Dalton Jay (Hamilton, Ontario) then potted two goals to close the game, stretching the lead for the home team permanently. Westfield State had 10 different skaters register with at least one point on the night.
Sophomore Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) turned aside 27 shots on the evening. His counterpart for Westfield State, Jonathan Loparco (Vaughan, Ontario), made 31 saves in the game.
The Corsairs will return to Hetland Arena for their second home contest of the season next week when they welcome Assumption on Nov.19th at 7:30 p.m.
