FITCHBURG, Mass. – Senior Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) netted a goal late in the third period on Saturday, forcing extra minutes as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth ice hockey squad played to a 2-2 tie with MASCAC foe Fitchburg State.
Restuccia evened the score for the second time on the night with 3:35 remaining in regulation. He picked off a pass to go top shelf on freshman goalie Charles Jakobsson (Jonkoping, Sweden), sending the game to extra time.
The Corsairs move to 7-13-4 and 6-8-3 in conference action, while the Falcons take just their second tie of the season to go to 10-13-2, and 7-9-2 in the MASCAC.
The Falcons got on the board first when junior Jon Johnanneson (Red Lake, Ont.) wristed a shot past UMass Dartmouth net-minder Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) putting the home team up 1-0 halfway through the first.
Under four minutes into the second period, sophomore Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) evened the game when the puck found his stick, where he ripped a shot from the point, hitting the back of the net for his 14th goal of the season.
Fitchburg State broke the tie in the third as junior Cameron Snyder (Shawnee, Kan.) found a hole on the near side of the net to notch his eighth goal of the season with 13:28 on the clock.
In the overtime period, Fitchburg outshot the Corsairs six to two, but neither team could put in the puck.
Through 65 minutes, UMass Dartmouth's Michals turned aside 39 shots, while his counterpart Jakobsson made 40 saves on the evening. The Corsairs held the slight 42-41 advantage in shots and avoided the penalty box all night.
UMass Dartmouth will close out the 2015-16 regular season when they host Framingham State Tuesday night, starting at 7:30pm. The Corsairs are vying for as high as the No. 3 seed for next week's MASCAC tournament, depending on next Tuesday's outcomes.
