WESTFIELD, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman Kai Kapossy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) earned his first recognition by the league office on Monday when he was tabbed the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.
Kapossy notched the decisive goal with seven minutes left in the overtime session, propelling the Corsairs past the Owls of Westfield State, 5-4, on Saturday during the quarterfinal round of the MASCAC tournament. The freshman also dished out an assist on the opening goal of the back-and-fourth playoff affair to earn his first multi-point game in the Blue & Gold.
The Fort Lauderdale-native has touched the ice in 24 games during his rookie campaign, posting 11 points on seven assists and four goals, with the game-winning marker becoming the first of his collegiate career. In the last three games, he has increased his productivity collecting three points after having just one in the previous seven games. Kapossy ranks 13th amongst the conference's freshman with 0.44 points per game.
Jonathan Ruiz (Williamstown, N.J.) landed on the weekly honorable mention for his two-goal effort in the quarterfinal victory. After scoring the opening marker, the junior leveled the score at three apiece when he re-directed a shot from the point, igniting a 2-1 third period exchange to force the game to overtime. Ruiz sits atop the nation for goals scored (26) and goals per game (1.00) and has a slim lead in the MASCAC for points with 43.
The #4 Corsairs go up against the MASCAC's regular-season champion Tuesday when they travel to faceoff with #1 Plymouth State University in the semifinal round at 7:00 pm.
