FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Junior Mason Nichols (Oviedo, Fla.) scored the game’s only goal 31 seconds into the final period to back a 28-save shutout effort in net by sophomore Parker Butler (Summit, N.J.), as UMass Dartmouth claimed its fourth straight victory and moved into first place in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey standings with a 1-0 league triumph over Fitchburg State Wednesday evening at the Wallace Civic Center.
Nichols’ unassisted tally (his third of the season) came after the squads played 40-plus scoreless minutes and helped the visiting Corsairs (11-8-1, 8-4-1 MASCAC) finish the month of January with a 6-1-1 mark. Butler took care of the rest to pick up his first clean sheet and sixth triumph of the year between the pipes for UMass Dartmouth, which is now 9-2-1 in its last 12 outings and moved a point ahead (17) of idle Plymouth State atop the MASCAC standings.
Sophomore Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) turned aside 39 shots in the setback for the host Falcons (9-9-2, 6-5-2 MASCAC), as the Corsairs outshot Fitchburg State by a 40-28 margin and held a 30-29 edge in the faceoff circle to take two out of three regular season series matchups between the two teams.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference clash on Saturday afternoon at Hetland Arena that faces off at 4:00 pm, while Fitchburg State entertains Plymouth State in a MASCAC outing on Saturday afternoon at the Wallace Civic Center that faces off at 5:00 pm.
