PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Junior Alec LeFave’s (Hudson, N.H.) goal 6:34 into the third period proved to be the game-winner and lifted Plymouth State to a 4-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday evening at Hanaway Rink.
The host Panthers (4-0-1, 2-0-1 MASCAC) jumped out to a 2-0 second period lead on power play tallies off the sticks of senior Tim Perron (Northboro, Mass.) and junior Victor Bergstrom (Angelholm, Sweden), but the visiting Corsairs (0-4, 0-3 MASCAC) sliced that margin in half on sophomore Kai Kapossy’s (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) goal with 5:19 to play in the middle stanza before evening matters on senior Brendan McDonough’s (Wilmington, Mass.) marker 6:04 into the final frame. LeFave gave Plymouth State the lead for good just 30 seconds after McDonough’s goal, and senior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) provided an insurance tally with 8:13 remaining to account for the final margin.
Volonnino added two assists to go with his goal to finish with three points in the triumph for the Panthers, who received a pair of helpers from senior Michael Covach (Shillington, Pa.) along with a two-point performance from Bergstrom. Senior Jonathan Ruiz (Williamstown, N.J.), junior Tommy DeFelice (Tolland, Conn.) and freshman Jimmy Pelton (Syracuse, N.Y.) notched assists on the night for UMass Dartmouth, which held a 28-24 edge in shots for the contest.
Senior Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) made 26 saves to earn his third win of the season in goal for Plymouth State, while senior Tommy Bay (Duluth, Ga.) registered 20 stops in the setback for the Corsairs, as the two teams met for the first time since UMass Dartmouth knocked the top-seeded Panthers out in last year’s MASCAC semifinal clash played at Hanaway Rink.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Westfield, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Westfield State in a MASCAC outing that faces off at 7:35 pm, while Plymouth State entertains Castleton in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Hanaway Rink that faces off at 6:00 pm.
