NEW BEDFORD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team tied the visiting Salem State Vikings, 3-3, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

Corsairs junior forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA/Lebanon Valley College) scored off the rebound of a shot by sophomore forward Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, MA/Eastern Kodiaks-IJHL), knotting the game at 3 at 15:41 of the third period and bringing UMass Dartmouth all the way back from a 3-0 deficit. Senior forward Andrew Pontes (New Bedford, MA/Winchendon School) also assisted on the game-tying goal.

"It was a good rally and you have to give a huge amount of credit to this team for battling back," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "They played a good third period and overall, it was a gritty, hard-working effort. This was an important point to get in the standings."

Viking junior forward Nick Lampson (Groton, MA/Jersey Hitmen-EJHL) opened up the scoring in the first period at 3:21 when he found the net over the glove-side shoulder of Corsairs junior goal Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL). Junior forward Matt Kenline (Yarmouth, MA/Wichita Falls-NAHL) assisted on the goal. Viking senior forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ/UMass Dartmouth) made it a 2-0 advantage just about ten minutes later as he scored on the power play off a nice feed from junior forward Casey Terreri (Warwick, RI/South Shore Kings-EJHL) at 13:18.

Both teams traded goals in the second period. The Vikings pushed the lead to 3-0, with their second power play goal of the game when Lampson scored assisted by senior forward Ian Flanagan (New Hampton, NH/Boston Bulldogs-AJHL) and Terreri at 5:26. The Corsairs got on the board as junior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr Warriors-EJHL) scored off the draw beating Salem State goalie Ryan Sutliffe (Grand Forks, ND/Helena Big Horns-NORPAC) and making it 3-1 at 9:04.

UMass Dartmouth cut the lead to 3-2 at 8:15 of the third period when junior forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr Falcons-EJHL) scored off a great feed from behind the net from senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr Bulldogs-AJHL). Senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) also assisted on the goal. The Corsairs outshot the Vikings, 37-28. Williams made 25 saves for UMD, while Sutliffe made 34 saves for Salem State. The Corsairs improved to 2-1-1 and 1-0-1 in the MASCAC with the tie, while the Vikings improved to 2-0-1 and 1-0-1 in conference play with the draw. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Wesleyan Tuesday. Salem State will play Amherst next Saturday.
