NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team will begin Little East Conference playoff action when they host Southern Maine Tuesday evening in a quarter-final playoff match. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs enter playoff competition as the fourth-seeded team, while USM is the fifth seed. Both teams were 3-4 in LEC action, while UMD enters the tournament with a 9-5 overall record, and Southern Maine is 6-9. The teams were part of a three-way tie for fourth place with Plymouth State. Since each team had a win over one of the others, the tie was broken by the second criterion, how teams did against others in descending order in the LEC. The Corsairs owned the only win against Western Connecticut State, giving them the fourth seed and last host slot, while USM defeated Plymouth State, enabling the Huskies to rank ahead of the Panthers. PSU travels to Western Connecticut Tuesday. The winner of the UMD-USM game visits Eastern Connecticut Thursday, while the other winner travels to Keene State.
UMass Dartmouth defeated Southern Maine, 14-5 at Cressy Field April 7th, but Corsair Head Coach Kevin Mahoney said that won't matter when they meet again.
"It took until the last day of the season to decide the third, fourth, fifth and sixth teams in our conference, so everyone is very close," said Mahoney. "Everyone starts out the playoffs zero and zero. Southern Maine is a good team that is very aggressive, and in order to be successful, we need to play 60 minutes of good lacrosse. I'm hoping for a positive result. We have a good opportunity to be successful this year, but we have to play well."
