GORHAM, ME—Sophomore midfielder Dennis Healy (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS) and junior attackman Adam Niden (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) scored consecutive goals in the third period to break a 6-6 tie and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team went on to defeat host Southern Maine, 9-8, n a Little East Conference match at Hannaford Field Saturday.
Healy scored with 7:45 left in the third quarter to break a 6-6 tie, and Niden's goal three minutes later gave UMD a two-goal advantage. Mark White scored for the Huskies with 1:33 left in the third quarter to cut the Corsairs' lead to 8-7. Junior midfielder Jordan McPherson (Westwood, MA/Westwood HS) scored early in the fourth quarter to restore UMD's two-goal lead. Kyle Baker scored for USM with 3:11 left to make it 9-8, but USM was unable to tie the score before time expired.
Southern Maine took a 5-3 lead after the first quarter, but junior midfielder Justin Lawless (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams HS) and freshman midfielder Alex Lucas (Brookfield, MA/Tantasqua HS) scored in the second quarter, and the teams were tied at halftime. White and McPherson exchanged goals in the third quarter before the Corsairs took the lead for good. McPherson and White led their teams with three goals each.
"We played well enough to win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We didn't have a good first quarter, but we adjusted and played well in the second and third quarters, and it was good to come out with a win. We're still a young team, and Southern Maine is much improved. It's good to be 7-1 and 2-0 in the conference."
Southern Maine out shot UMD, 37-36. Junior goalkeeper Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) made 15 saves for UMD, while Ryan Hatch made eight stops for USM.
UMD improved to 7-1 and 2-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Southern Maine dropped to 4-4 and 0-2 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening. Southern Maine will visit Colby Wednesday.
