Men's Lacrosse Hosts LEC Quarter-Final Tuesday Evening
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA---When it comes to making the post-season playoffs, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team has been as regular as clockwork. The Corsairs have advanced to the LEC post-season playoffs in each season since the inception of the tournament in 2001.
This year, the Corsairs tied for third in the final standings, and earned the third seed in the tournament on the basis of their victory against Plymouth State Saturday. UMass Dartmouth will host sixth-seeded Western Connecticut State in an LEC quarter-final match Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs bring a 10-4 overall record and a 4-3 LEC mark into the game. Western Connecticut is 8-8 overall and 2-5 in the LEC. The Colonials lost their last three games, while UMD won both of their games in the final week of the schedule.
The teams met on the opening weekend of the conference schedule, when WCSU outscored the Corsairs, 4-0 in the second quarter to take a 6-3 halftime lead. UMD outscored Western Connecticut, 8-5, in the second half, scoring three goals in the final 1:24 of regulation time to tie the game, and scoring the winning goal 1:29 into overtime to take a 12-11 victory.
"This is always a great time of year with the playoffs," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "Our league can be very competitive. In the past four years, the spots from third place to sixth place have been decided in the last week of the regular season. Keene State and Eastern Connecticut are the favorites, but there have been numerous close games. On the right day and with the right team, anybody can win."
The winner of Tuesday's game will advance to a semi-final match at Eastern Connecticut State Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
