NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Salve Regina scored four goals in the first seven minutes, took a 7-1 first-quarter lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team, 15-6, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Wednesday.
Sophomore midfielder Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) interrupted the SRU run with the Corsairs' only goal in the first quarter. Brendan Rooney scored three of the Seahawks' first six goals. Brendan Carroll scored the only goal of the second quarter go give SRU an 8-1 halftime advantage.
Arsenault scored three times in the first half of the third quarter, but the Seahawks outscored UMD in that quarter, 5-4, to extend their lead.
Arsenault finished with four goals, while senior midfielders Matt Swirbalus (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) and Steve Colella (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) each scored once. Rooney led Salve Regina with five goals and three assists, Chris Walker scored three goals and added one assist, Carroll scored twice, and Ryan Doherty added a pair of assists.
"We started out very poorly in the first quarter, we didn't play the way we are capable of playing," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We came back later and showed some life, but it was too late. We dug ourselves too big a hole to get out of. We have to regroup and get ready for Clark Saturday."
Salve Regina out shot UMass Dartmouth, 45-22. Brian Walker made six saves for the Seahawks, while UMD freshman goalkeeper Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made 13 saves.
The Corsairs fell to 1-3 with the defeat, while Salve Regina improved to 4-1 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Clark on Saturday, while the Seahawks will visit UMass Boston Saturday.
