NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Norwich, 13-8, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.
Six Corsairs recorded goals during the contest. Junior attacker Nick Brett (Loudon, NH/Merrimack Valley HS/AIC) and senior attacker Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) led the way, each netting four goals with an assist. Freshman attacker Adam Niden (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) scored two goals while sophomore defender Larry Gilvarg (Natick, MA/Natick HS) and freshman midfielders Justin Lawless (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams HS) and James Smith (Methuen, MA/Central Catholic HS) added a goal apiece.
Cadets sophomore attacker Joe Galante (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) scored four goals with two assists. Freshman midfielder Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, MD/Urbana HS) added a goal and an assist. Freshman midfielders Patrick Tommins (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe HS) and Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, NH/Tilton Academy) tallied a goal in the loss.
Mendoza gave the Cadets an early 1-0 lead, scoring less than two minutes into regulation. Brett rallied the Corsairs with back-to-back goals, but Galante answered with his first goal of the game, tying the score at 2-2 with 6:54 left in the first quarter. The Corsairs closed the first quarter with goals from Lawless and Arsenault. Tommins cut the deficit to 4-3 in the opening minute of the second quarter before the Corsairs scored six consecutive goals, featuring two from both Brett and Arsenault, putting UMD up 10-3 with 5:39 remaining in the third quarter. Each team added a goal as the third quarter came to a close. Norwich outscored the Corsairs, 4-2, in the fourth quarter, including two goals in the final minute, but it wasn't enough overcome their early deficit, resulting in the 13-8 victory for UMD.
"We played all four quarters and we did a good job against a young Norwich team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We took a lot of shots on goal today and we responded well after they scored. Our defense is playing phenomenal lacrosse, I can't say enough about Gilvarg, sophomore defender Ryan Holbrook (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) and freshman defender Steve Tarpey (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS). We are playing better as a team."
The Corsairs outshot the Cadets, 42-30, during the contest. Corsair freshman goalkeeper Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) stopped seven shots and junior goalkeeper Andrew Weaver (Westport, MA/Westport HS) made two saves for UMD, while junior goalkeeper Nathan Proctor (Pleasanton, CA/Foothill HS) made nine saves for Norwich.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-0 with the victory, while Norwich dropped to 2-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit MIT Tuesday evening. Norwich will visit Castleton State Wednesday.
