NORTON, MA-Host Wheaton took an 8-2 halftime lead and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team, 15-8, in a non-conference match at Mirrione Stadium Saturday.
The Lyons took a 4-0 lead before junior attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) put UMass Dartmouth on the board with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter. Arsenault's second goal of the game with 1:18 remaining in the first half cut the Lyons' advantage to 7-2, but Billy McNamara scored for Wheaton with 17 seconds remaining in the half to put WC ahead at halftime, 8-2.
Sophomore midfielder Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic HS) scored twice andsenior attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) and sophomore midfielder Terence Dineen (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) each scored once for UMD uin the third quarter, but McNamara and Chris Landers each scored twice for the Lyons in a six-goal third quarter that left them ahead, 14-6. Roberto and Arsenault scored fourth-quarter goals for the Corsairs.
Arsenault and Roberto led UMass Dartmouth with three goals apiece. Landers scored five times and McNamara added four goals for Wheaton.
The Lyons out shot the Corsairs, 36-31. Sophomore goaltender Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made 11 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Schuyler Horn made 11 for Wheaton. UMD converted one of five extra-man opportunities, while the Lyons were two for three.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 3-4 with the defeat, while Wheaton improved to 2-2 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host MIT Tuesday evening.
