CAMBRIDGE, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team outscored host MIT, 7-1, in the final 21:54 of their game and went on to defeat the Engineers, 10-4, in their non-conference contest at Steinbrenner Stadium Tuesday evening.
The Corsairs broke a 3-3 tie by scoring three consecutive goals late in the third quarter to take the lead for good. Senior attacker Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) put UMass Dartmouth ahead for good when he scored with 6:54 left in the third quarter, then senior midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) scored twice to make it 6-3 before Dan Piemont scored for MIT with 1:56 left in the third quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to the Corsairs, with junior attacker Nick Brett (Loudon, NH/Merrimack Valley HS/AIC) scoring twice and Espinola and freshman attacker Adam Niden (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) each scoring once.
Espinola led the Corsairs with three goals, while Arsenault, Brett and Niden each scored twice. Piemont scored all four goals for the Engineers.
"We came out a little flat, but we played well defensively," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "They're a very good defensive team and they have a good goalie. We were able to pull away in the fourth quarter. Our (freshman) goalkeeper, Nick Thayer, (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) played very well, our defense played very well, and Stephen Espinola played well both offensively and defensively."
The Corsairs outshot the Engineers, 47-2. Thayer (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) made 11 saves for UMD, while Christopher Rullan made 16 saves for MIT.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-0 with the victory, while MIT dropped to 1-3 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday in the 2011 Little East Conference opener. Tuesday evening. MIT will visit Clark Saturday.
