NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team took a 6-2 halftime lead and went on to defeat visiting MIT, 10-4, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Wednesday evening.
Senior attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) broke a 1-1 tie with his first two goals of the game at the end of the first quarter to put UMass Dartmouth ahead for good. Foster scored with 3:31 left in the first quarter, and again with three seconds left to put the Corsairs ahead, 3-1.
Junior attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) made it 4-1 one minute into the second quarter. After sophomore midfielder Carl Tilbury (Newbury, Berkshire, United Kingdom) scored for the Engineers, Foster scored twice to make it 6-2 at halftime. Arsenault and junior midfielder Bobby Smith (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) made it 8-2 by scoring the first two goals if the third quarter.
"We played very well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "MIT is a good team, and they did a greatr job of possessing the ball, and they have a talented goalie who made a lot of good saves and kept them in the the game. We did a better job of converting our chances than we did last Saturday, and our defense, which has been phenomenal all year long, did a good job. (Sophomore goalie) Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) did a lot of good things, he is a vocal leader who is always talking to the defense and keeping them on the same page."
Foster scored five goals for the Corsairs, while Arsenault and Smith each scored twice. Junior attackman Dan Piemont (Summit, NJ/Deerfield HS) scored twice for the Engineers.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-4 with the victory, while MIT dropped to 2-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Keene State in their 2010 Little East Conference opener Saturday. The Engineers will visit Wheaton Saturday.
