GORHAM, ME-Junior attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) scored the only goal of the fourth quarter and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team held off Southern Maine, 9-7, in a Little East Conference match at Paula Hodgdon Field Saturday.
Foster's goal, at 11:49 of the fourth quarter, restored a two-goal lead. UMass Dartmouth had built an 8-4 advantage in the third quarter before USM's Tim Bryant scored three consecutive goals the last one with six seconds remaining, to make it 8-7 entering the fourth quarter.
Four different Corsairs scored in the first period, which ended with UMD ahead, 4-3. Senior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) and sophomore midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) gave UMass Dartmouth a 6-3 second-quarter lead, and junior midfielder Mike Lee (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) and Leary scored in the third quarter to make it 8-4.
Leary, Lee and Foster each finished with two goals, with Leary adding two assists and Foster one. Bryant had four goals for the Huskies.
"We played a good, talented Southern Maine team and played well, especially in the first half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We played well defensively, and we scored when we had to. We improved as a team, and we are getting better each week across the board."
Corsair freshman goaltender Kevin Pelsinski (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack HS) made 17 saves, while James Suriyodorn made 11 for the Huskies.
The Corsairs improved to 5-5 and 2-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Southern Maine dropped to 5-4 and 1-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut Tuesday.
