April 28, 2009
PLYMOUTH, NH-Host Plymouth State held the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team to a single goal in the first half and went on to defeat the Corsairs, 10-4, in a first round Little East Conference playoff match at Panther Field Tuesday.
The Panthers scored the first five goals of the game, taking an early lead before senior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) put the Corsairs on the board with 2:39 remaining in the first half. Tim Hadley and Brian Giroux scored to give PSU a six-goal lead before sophomore midfielder Bobby Smith (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) scored a man-up goal and junior attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) scored with UMD a man down to make it 7-3 with 5:07 left in the third quarter. But the Corsairs could manage just one more goal, by Foster early in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers scored the final two goals to account for the final score.
Foster led the Corsairs with two goals, while Smith and Leary each scored once. Giroux, Hadley and Andrew Eriksen each scored twice for Plymouth State. "We didn't play well, and Plymouth State took advantage of all of the chances that we gave them," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We fought back, but they had the lead the whole game. They did a good job of ball possession, and they played better than they did two weeks ago. We saw a lot of good things from our team this year, and we saw some that need improvement."
Plymouth State out shot UMass Dartmouth, 34-29. Corsair freshman goaltender Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made 10 saves, while Kevin Hayes made nine stops for the Panthers.
The Corsairs dropped to 6-9 with the defeat, while the Panthers improved to 7-7 with the victory. Plymouth State will play at Eastern Connecticut State Thursday in a Little East Conference semi-final match. The competition was the final match of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
