Jan. 6, 2009

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will serve as captains during the 2009 spring season.

Senior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS), senior midfielder Steve Colella (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and junior midfielder Mike Lee (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) have been named.

Leary has scored 52 goals and added 18 assists in his first two seasons with the Corsairs. Colella has scored 18 goals and added six assists and is a three-year letter winner, while Lee returns for his third season as a midfielder, having scored 12 goals and added one assist in two seasons.

"The role our captains played last year was instrumental in our success," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "Matt is an emotional leader, and has done a great job knowing when to push it, and when to relax. He works hard on the field and in the weight room, and has matured into an excellent leader. Steve has worked his way up from his freshman year to first becoming a defensive midfielder, and then a first string midfielder. He is a very physical player, and brings intensity to the team Mike's progress has been on par with his confidence. Playing midfield requires a wide range of skills, and last year, Mike did many things that did not show up on the scoreboard. He is an integral part of our midfield, and will do whatever is best for the team."

UMass Dartmouth finished at 10-5, 3-3 in the Little East Conference, and hosted a conference first round playoff game. The Corsairs will open their 2009 season at MIT on Saturday, March 7th.
