Victor Ferreira and Slex Machado
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Four members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team have earned Little East Conference post-season honors.
Freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS), sophomore midfielder Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) and sophomore defender Alex Machado (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) were named first team All-Conference, while junior defender Brady Paradis (Tiverton, RI/Providence Country Day HS) was named second team All-Conference. Gontijo was named LEC Rookie of the Year.
Gontijo led the Corsairs in scoring with 10 goals and four assists for 24 points, Ferreira was second with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points, Machado was fourth with three goals and one assist for seven points, and Paradis had two goals for four points. Machado and Paradis led the defense, which allowed only 34 goals in 19 games.
"As a whole, I think they're great representatives of our team, they took on large roles and accepted them," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "Nick was a good player from the first day of camp. He established himself as one of our dominant players, worked hard on the field and in training sessions, and had a positive effect on the remainder of the team. He stepped up for us in big matches. Victor followed up last season with a great sophomore season. We asked him to take a different role this year, playing as the central midfielder, and being a creator, and a lot of people benefited from that role. Alex is a strong defender who is pretty versatile, and can be intimidating. He also took free kicks for us and he scored on a couple of them. Brady was Mr. Consistent-this is his third year in a row as a second team All-Conference Player. He stepped up as our team captain and was able to manage a lot of different personalities, which helped lead to our success."
The Corsairs finished 11-7-1 and advanced to the semi-finals of the LEC Tournament.
