NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team downed visiting Western Connecticut State 1-0 in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
The Corsairs and Colonials battled all afternoon trading blows before UMD sophomore midfielder Jordan Sindo (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) broke a scoreless tie, breaking past two WCSU defenders to score in the 87th minute.
"Western Connecticut State plays us well every year," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Head Coach Brian Medeiros. "We came out a little slowly and we decided to switch our formation in the second half to regain possession and play a more controlled style. The formation switch worked out well. From there Jordan (Sindo) put the team on his shoulders and flew past the defenders to give us the victory."
The Corsairs bounced back well from their only loss of the season, outshooting the Colonials 10-5. Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made two saves for UMD to register his second shutout of the season, while junior Jack Holub (Sherman, CT/New Milford HS) made five stops for WCSU.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-1-0 and 2-0-0 in LEC play with the victory, while the Colonials fell to 1-5-1 and 1-1-0 in LEC play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Connecticut College next Wednesday. WCSU will visit Trinity Wednesday.
