BUZZARDS BAY, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored twice in the second half and pulled away for a 3-0 victory over host Massachusetts Maritime in a non-conference match at Clean Harbors Stadium Thursday evening.
Sophomore midfielder John Macaroco (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) put the Corsairs on top in the first half, heading home a pass from junior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) in the 25th minute.
Junior midfielder Anthony dos Santos (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) made it 2-0 when he headed in a pass from sophomore midfielder Jordan Sindo (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) at 59:34. Ferreira completed the scoring at 69:03, taking a cross from dos Santos, who was credited with the assist.
"We came out very strong, we did a good job of possessing the ball, and we played well," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Brian Medeiros. "It was a good effort, and everyone got to play to get ready for this weekend's match."
UMD outshot the Buccaneers, 14-7. Senior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made one save for the Corsairs, with freshman keeper Tyler Mandeville (Webster, MA/Bartlett HS) coming in with 14 minutes remaining to finish the shutout. Brett Young made three stops for Mass Maritime.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-3-0 with the victory, while Mass Maritime dropped to 6-4-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Southern Maine Saturday..
