Men's Soccer Tops Southern Maine In OT, 4-3

GORHAM, ME-Junior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) scored three goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team to a 4-3 overtime victory over host Southern Maine in a Little East Conference match at Hannaford Field Saturday.

Ferreira took a through ball from junior midfielder Antony dos Santos (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and fired a low shot past Southern Maine goalkeeper Jeremy Turner 70 seconds into sudden death overtime to end the match.

Ferreira had scored the Corsairs' first two goals, putting UMD ahead, 1-0, just 2:11 after the start of the match, and giving the Corsairs a 2-1 lead when he converted a pass from senior forward Fouad Shahin (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet HS) in the 20th minute. Mazen Aljari out USM on the board when he converted a penalty kick at 9:57, Ahmed Ben Afif tied the score for the Huskies at 2-2 with a goal at 25:17, and Ben Afif put Southern Maine ahead, 3-2 when he scored at 51:15. Junior midfielder Adam Philbin (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland HS/RIC/CCRI) tied the game for the Corsairs when he converted a pass from sophomore midfielder Jordan Sindo (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) in the 55th minute.

"We found a way to win," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Brian Medeiros. "It wasn't pretty, but Victor had a hat trick, Adam Philbin had a nice goal, and Anthony dos Santos, Jordan Sindo and (freshman defender) Troy Msrtins (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) all played very well. We has a lot of opportunities towards the end, and couldn't finish. Southern Maine had a good game plan, they played well against us."

The Corsairs outshot the Huskies, 18-15. Senior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made four saves for UMD, while Turner stopped two shots for USM.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-3-0 and 5-0-0 in the LEC with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 4-10-0 and 1-4-0 in LEC action with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Worcester State next Tuesday evening.
