NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team will begin their quest for the Little East Conference title when they visit Keene State Thursday evening. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at the Owl Sports Complex.
UMass Dartmouth is 11-6, 5-2 in the LEC and earned the third seed in the tournament. KSC is 11-6-1 and 5-1-1 and is seeded second.
This is the Corsairs' seventh appearance in the LEC Tournament since its inception in 1998. The tournament has included only the top four teams, except in 2000, 2001 and 2002, when the top six teams were invited. UMD was seeded second in 2000, defeating Keene State and then losing in the finals to Plymouth State. They were seeded third once and fourth four times, winning at Keene State in 2009, 2-1, before falling to Eastern Connecticut State in the championship match. UMD lost at Keene State in 2010, 2-1, and then lost again two days later by the same score after they protested the result and it was upheld because of an officiating error.
Four of UMD's six losses this season have come in overtime, and the Corsairs have outscored their opposition, 35-22. Senior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) has earned every decision in goal this season and has 1.35 goals against average.
The winner of the match will advance to Saturday's championship match against the winner of the match between Eastern Connecticut State and Plymouth State.
