KEENE, NH-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team took an early 2-0 lead and rolled to a 3-1 victory over host Keene State in their Little East Conference Tournament semi-final match at the Owl Sports Complex Thursday evening.
Sophomore defender Josh Chao (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Central Connecticut State) put UMass Dartmouth ahead when he headed home a corner kick by sophomore forward Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde/Burke HS) in the eighth minute. Borges took a pass from senior defender Brady Paradis (Tiverton, RI/Providence Country Day HS), broke in alone on goal and scored in the 18th minute to make it 2-0.
Sophomore midfielder Zach Banas (Monson, MA/Monson HS) made it 3-0 when he converted a pass from sophomore forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) with 11:37 remaining. Blake Nyman scored for Keene State in the 89th minute.
"We played very well," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Brian Medeiros. "We had a lot of guys that stepped up tonight, our team realized what we had to do, we came out of our funk and we were ready to go."
The Corsairs outshot the Owls, 16-12. UMD senior goalkeeper Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA/Masconomet HS) and freshman goalie Tyler Mandeville (Webster, MA/Bartlett HS) each played a half, and combined for one save, while Malcolm Cheney made two stops for Keene State.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 12-6-0 with the victory, while Keene State dropped to 11-7-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will visit Eastern Connecticut State in Saturday's championship match. Keene State was eliminated from the tournament.
