FALL RIVER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored twice within less than three minutes in the second and defeated visiting Salem State, 3-2, in the 2013 opener for both teams at Durfee High School here Wednesday evening.
With the game tied, 1-1, junior defender Alex Machado (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) scored for the Corsairs at 60:10. Freshman forward Matt Vidal (New Bedford, MA/Dartmouth HS) scored at 63:01 and the Corsairs held on after sophomore midfielder Ralph Bertrand (Rowley, MA/St. Mary's HS) scored at 73:24.
Sophomore midfielder Corey Morris (Freehold, NJ/Freehold HS) scored the only goal of the first half for UMD at 13:37. Sophomore midfielder Tim Kilpatrick (Anaheim, CA/Loara HS) tied the score for SSU less than four minutes into the second half.
"It was a sloppy game, but it was good to know that in a sloppy game, we could come out with the win," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Josh Canha. :Our center backs, (junior) Josh Chao (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and Alex Machado had a great game in the middle, and Matt Vidal had a phenomenal game up front."
SSU outshot the Corsairs, 13-11. UMD freshman goalkeeper Luis Carranza (New Bedford, MA/Greater NB Vo Tech HS) and junior Nondas Kargakis (Heraklion, Greece/Third HS) each made three saves.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-0-0 with the victory, while Salem State fell to 0-1-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Connecticut College Sunday. The Vikings will host Endicott Saturday.
