NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team hosted Connecticut College, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Sunday afternoon. The Camels defeated the Corsairs, 2-1.
With the game tied 1-1, Connecticut College scored the game deciding goal when senior forward Billy Hawkey (Pennington, N.J.) netted his second score of the contest. The goal was scored with 11:10 left in regulation and was assisted by freshman forward Christian Egglin (Barrington, R.I.).
In the first half, UMass Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal) scored an unassisted goal with 21:33 left.
The Camels tied the game with 27:11 left in the second half when freshman forward Ibrahim Mutala (Accra, Ghana) assisted Hawkey on his first of two goals.
Connecticut College out shot the Corsairs 13-11. The Camels' senior goalkeeper, Max Nichols (Mill Valley, CA), recorded 12 saves, while UMass Dartmouth's freshman goalkeeper Andrew Deane (Woburn, MA/Woburn HS) had seven.
"We matched up well in the first half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We couldn't sustain it. We were out played in the second half. We played well in spurts, but we have to get our rhythm and timing down, and put it together for a full 90 minutes."
The Camels improved to 2-0-0 with the victory, while the Corsairs fell to 1-1-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Daniel Webster Wednesday. Connecticut College will visit Middlebury next Saturday.
