NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team scored five goals in a span of 21 minutes and 16 seconds early in the second half and went on to defeat visiting Daniel Webster, 5-1, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Wednesday.
After holding an 8-1 shot advantage in a scoreless first half, the Corsairs got on the board when sophomore forward Aelaf Solomon (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) scored unassisted less than two minutes after the second half began. Solomon then assisted on a goal by senior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Miguel, Portugal/New Bedford HS) that made it 2-0 just 38 seconds later. Ferreira then drew the assist on freshman forward Matt Vidal's (New Bedford, MA/Dartmouth HS) goal at 54:29 to make it 3-0.
Junior defender Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) scored at 61:59 to make it 4-0, and junior midfielder Kyle Duarte (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) capped the rally when he scored at 68:09. Freshman defender Alex Sarkis (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) assisted on Foster-Gorbach's goal. Freshman midfielder Cameron Cormay (Hudson, NH/Alvirne HS) scored the Eagles' only goal with 15:53 remaining.
"In the first half, we were content and we let them dictate the pace," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "At the start of the second half, we put another guy forward, and we took it to them."
UMass Dartmouth out shot Daniel Webster, 24-5. Freshman goalkeepers Andrew Deane (Woburn, MA/Woburn HS) and Luis Carranza (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) each made one save for UMD, while sophomore Sean Hamilton (Brookline, NH/Hollie-Brookline HS) made seven stops for DWC, while junior Sal Santa Maria (Thomaston, CT/Thomaston HS) added one.
The Corsairs improved to 2-1-0 with the victory, while the Eagles fell to 2-2-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Framingham State Saturday. Daniel Webster will host Green Mountain Saturday.
