Men's Soccer Blanks Salve Regina, 2-0

NEWPORT, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored twice in the first half and went on to blank host Salve Regina, 2-0, in a non-conference match at Brother Michael Reynolds Field here Tuesday.

Junior defender Josh Chao (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/CCSU) put the Corsairs ahead when he converted a pass from senior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Miguel, Portugal/New Bedford HS) in the 22nd minute. Junior midfielder Mike Diogo (Bristol, RI/Mt. Hope/URI) made it 2-0 when he scored with 3:42 remaining in the first half. Freshman midfielder Matt Vidal (New Bedford, MA/Dartmouth HS) assisted.

Salve Regina outshot UMass Dartmouth, 12-9. Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Deane (Woburn, MA/Woburn HS) made four saves in earning his first shutout of the season, while Jeffrey L'Heureux was credited with one save for the Seahawks.

"It was a good win," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Brian Medeiros. "We started off strong in the first half, and held possession. Josh Chao scored our first goal on a great shot, a clean volley, and Mike Diogo had his first goal as well. Our freshman goalkeeper, Andrew Deane, played well, he made some nice stops."

The Corsairs improved to 4-1-0 with the victory, while the Seahawks fell to 2-3-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College in their Little East Conference opener Saturday. Salve Regina will visit Gordon Saturday.
