Western Denies Corsairs Chance To Capture Little East Title
DANBURY, Conn. -- Western Connecticut State University goalkeeper Bobby Strevel made 12 saves to record his third shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this afternoon in a Little East men's soccer match at the Western Athletic Complex. The Corsairs held a decisive 30-9 advantage in shots, but were unable to solve Strevel.
UMass Dartmouth (10-7, 5-2 LEC) needed a win or a tie to earn the program's first regular-season conference title and home field advantage throughout the Little East Championship. The Corsairs earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament for just the second time in program history (2000), while Eastern Connecticut captured the top-seed. UMass Dartmouth will host Keene State College at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Cressy Field.
The Colonials (4-13-2, 2-3-2) scored the eventual game-winner in the 24th minute, when Aisian Sartori notched his third marker off the season off an assist from Ignacio Alday. Western Connecticut added an insurance goal in the 53rd minute. Alday registered his second helper of the contest on Andres Jimenez-Franck first tally of the campaign.
Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) made three saves in the net for the visitors.
